The P400 terminals are part of the Engage range, which have been introduced by Verifone to replace the VX range, which by the end of 2020 will be retired and discontinued. No additional software is needed, as the terminals communicate with GPoS using TCP/IP sockets on either a wired or wireless network. Configuration of the integration is achieved through the GPoS Utility, with any required network configuration completed on the P400 itself. EFT receipts can be printed through GPoS, or by the built-in printer if the terminal supports it.

GPoS version
1.64 - see the
Verifone P400 GPoS Setup article for details on configuring GPoS to integrate with the terminal
-
Fixed IP addresses are required for the terminals, as GPoS needs to be pointed at the IP address of the required terminal
-
Internet access for the P400 terminals with inbound and outbound communication allowed through the required IP addresses and ports - see the
Fidelity For IT article for the current list of Verifone IP addresses and ports

Login and Transaction Process
Unlike terminals which are driven by the Ocius Sentinel software, communications are conducted solely over the network. There is no initial login process when GPoS starts up; instead, GPoS sends the login command as part of every transaction. GPoS sends transaction data on the Command socket (25000), and listens on the Message socket (25001) for responses from the terminal. All transaction processing is completed by the P400 itself through the payment gateway using point to point encryption. As a result, GPoS does not see any sensitive data, and is therefore not a focus for PCI compliance.
Daily Auto Restart
The P400 terminals have an auto restart routine every night for maintenance and update purposes, which means that the terminal will display a “
Waiting for Merchant Login ” message first thing every morning (see below for a video showing the startup sequence). When the first card transaction of the day is attempted, the terminal will first display a “
Connecting ” message, followed by the “
Ready ” message, and is at this point that there may be a delay of 7-10 seconds whilst GPoS confirms the connection, before the customer is asked to present or insert their card.
